Split Stars {Finished Quilt}

While I made this quilt top all the way back in August, I didn't get it finished until November. 

This quilt was a gift for our friends who also had a baby boy this fall!

I did a simple meander for the quilting and used the coordinating fabrics for the border and the binding. For the backing, I used blue and white plaid flannel.

James let me borrow his crib to model the quilt I made for his new best friend!

Split Stars Quilt Top {Try A Tool with Island Batik}

 Finally an update for my August Island Batik project!

I finished up all of my blocks and turned them into a top! I'm not sure what kind of border this one will have. Maybe light blue?

While it was a bit of a learning curve to use the V-block ruler, it did work out well for these blocks. I liked that I could also use the V-block ruler to trim my HSTs too instead of needing to switch between rulers.

This might be as far as this project gets this month; I have two blog hop projects to work on that are scheduled for early September that will be my main focus for the next two weekends. But this will go back to the top of the to do list once those to the blog hop projects are done!

Up in the Air {New Applique Pattern!}

 We've added another applique add-on to our Etsy and Payhip shops for use with our Ready Set Soar and Boot Scootin' Baby patterns!

Our "Up In the Air" hot air balloon appliques are another perfect baby quilt option!

Inspired by the hot air balloon fabric she used in this quilt, Amanda made this baby quilt for a good friend last year! The PDF includes applique templates for three different sizes of balloons and two different sizes of clouds.

Daisy Chain Baby -- Part II {Finished Quilt}

I realized this week that I had to get this quilt finished -- and quick -- because little lady is likely to arrive any day! So this week I did got a step or two of finishing done every day until I sewed the last stitch yesterday -- washing and pressing the backing, getting the quilt layered and basted, quilting and trimming, and finally binding!

Here is little lady's quilt!

As mentioned previously, this quilt is the Daisy Chain pattern that was our quilt along pattern in 2019 (that will eventually be available as a stand alone pattern) in the baby size with a 2.5" border on all four sides. The fabrics used are from the Painted Meadow line by Robin Pickens which were scraps left over from another quilt that I will finally get to show you in July!

For the quilting, I used a meander with interspersed flowers -- just like the original verison of this quilt that I made!

The backing is an adorable flannel with lady bugs and butterflies. The binding is the same pink floral that I used for the star blocks.

This quilt was delivered yesterday to little lady's parents in case she arrives this weekend!

Daisy Chain Baby -- Part II {Quilt Top}

Over the weekend, I finished up the quilt top of the Daisy Chain baby quilt I have been working on.

All I had to do was sew the nine blocks together...

... and then add the borders!

I actually just squeaked by with enough green fabric for the borders! I still have plenty of the pink fabric that I used for the stars, so I will be using that for the binding.

On my task list this week is ordering some flannel for the backing!

Daisy Chain Baby -- Part II {Star Blocks}

The best thing about baby quilt is how quickly they start coming together! This week I have been working on the star blocks of my Daisy Chain baby quilt.

For the stars, I am using the pink large scale floral print.

The star points are all "ribbon blocks" as I like to call them.

Now my five star blocks are all finished and the top of my quilt is ready to be assembled!

I'll need to start thinking about ordering a backing for this as I know I don't have anything on hand at the moment that will work.

Daisy Chain Baby -- Part II {New Project}

With a bunch of friends having babies in 2020, it's time to start making baby quilts!

The first quilt I have on my list is for a baby girl that's due in July. I made my baby sized Daisy Chain quilt for her older sister two years ago so I thought it would be a perfect choice to make the new baby the same quilt in different colors!

I pulled out a bag of fabrics left over from a quilt that I made last year (that I haven't gotten to show off yet!) that was a mish-mash of yardage and the stubs from jelly roll strips.

The dark teal print will be the four patch "chains", the pink will be the stars, and the green print will be the border and potentially the binding.

I started by working on the different four patches needed for the quilt, starting with the teal four patches and then making the four patches for the cross blocks.

Next, I decided to continue working with my jelly roll stubs and make the linear four patches.

And now I have all four of my cross blocks completed!

Next I will need to do the cutting for the ribbon blocks for the stars, and the star blocks will take slightly more time than the cross blocks, but there's a good chance I could have this quilt top done within a week or two!

Rail Fence Baby Quilt {Finished Quilt}

Yes, another finish to share today!

When I was working on my Hattie's Choice quilt that I showed off yesterday, I also prepared the binding for and sewed the binding onto my already quilted Rail Fence baby quilt.

For this quilt, I used red solid cotton for the binding since I have almost no fabric left from this bundle!

Since this quilt was already quilted and trimmed, it was quick work to add the binding to this quilt.

I also hand stitched the binding to the backing on this quilt -- this might be the "new norm" for quilting during quarantine for me!

Hattie's Choice {Finished One Die Wonder Quilt}

When last I posted about this quilt, I thought that I would be adding a border -- and then I started digging through my Island Batik stash only to realize that I only had one half yard of purple and no other pink or purple to use to finish this quilt! Oops! So instead, I decided to quilt this quilt as is -- a bitty baby quilt -- and use a neutral dot batik for the backing.

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics, Aurifil thread, Accuquilt products, and Hobbs Batting to use and share with you!

For the batting, I had a small sized Hobbs Thermore batting left over from last year's Island Batik Ambassador box which was a good fit for this quilt.

Here's the quilt post-quilting, pre-trim.

I used purple Aurifil thread in the pink and purple areas to quilt simple arch dot-to-dot style designs. In the background, I used a gold-tan Aurifil thread to quilt simple meanders.

I used my last purple half yard for the binding, as I mentioned above! For some reason, right now I have A LOT of blue and green batiks hanging around.

And voila -- a finished quilt!

Here's a close up of blocks which shows off some of the quilting a little bit better:

The backing is a dingy white-grey print, which shows off the quilting quite a lot!

I machine stitched the binding to the front of the quilt and hand stitched it to the back during our copious indoor time this weekend. Here in PA it rained the entire weekend, which was rather unwelcome after spending the week indoors working from home.

Rail Fence Baby Quilt {Quilted}

My COVID quarantine is not necessarily the boon for sewing time as it seems to be for many of the people that I follow on Instagram. I still have to work full time from home, I'm trying to exercise every day (at bare minimum, taking a walk in my neighborhood), and spend some quality time with my husband. I'm definitely not sewing every day, but a little bit most days.

But I did quilt a little something this weekend. It's not bound yet, but it is at least quilted.

Back in October, I used the scraps left over from the Baseball Baby quilts that I made in 2018 (using this pattern as the base) to make this giant rail fence baby quilt.

This quilt top used up the rest of the strip sets that I had sewn for the quilts and I had enough of the white print for a border.

Saturday morning, I whip stitched some batting scraps together so that they were big enough for this quilt top; I also used two pieces of scrap flannel left over from the backings of the Hip To Be Square quilts I made last fall for the backing of this quilt.

I did simple meanders in white thread moving from the center of the quilt out to prevent puckers, bubbles, and folds -- I love backing in flannel because it slides so well on the machine, but the little bit of extra stretch it has in comparison to regular 100% quilting cotton is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to free motion quilting.

I finished this quilting in less than an hour!

Here's a closer view that shows the quilting a little better.

While I wasn't sure I had anything to use for the binding, I found some red solid that will work perfect for the binding! I'm planning to stitch this by hand -- plenty of movie-watching time to work on hand binding these days!

One Die Wonder {Blocks on Blocks}

When I posted about this project last week, I showed off by first block:

Since then, I have finished up all of the blocks and arranged them into the quilt top!

I randomly pulled block sets to work on and worked on one block at a time until all 20 blocks were complete!

I arranged my blocks in diagonal rows and sewed the top together.

My quilt is now 32" x 40" and I will see if I have anything to use as a border.

Little Lady Quilt {Finished Baby Quilt}

I have a finish to share today, and I'm going to embarrass myself in the process!

I have been in a major "sort it, use it, organize it, clear it out" mood with my sewing room and quilting supplies. Before we moved, I did not get to to the reorganization and purge that I envisioned -- because we moved up our moving date, everything went from the shelves and bins straight to the moving boxes and then back on the shelves.

So imagine my surprise when I was looking for something else and I found this baby quilt top at the bottom of a pile of projects:

I had to go back three and a half years to find when I had made this quilt top. This was two apartments ago! I made this quilt top using the Jelly Roll Jam 2 pattern from the Fat Quarter shop using scrappy fat quarters left over from other baby quilt projects and I just made as many blocks as I could make with the scraps that I had.

This project somehow has escaped being placed on my running WIP list; I decided that instead of adding it to the list "officially" I would do my best to finish it up in October.

I found a piece of fabric big enough to use for backing left over from my Summer on the Coast quilt. I guess that I had really over-estimated how much backing and binding fabric I needed!

I didn't find light brown thread in my stash that I liked (the ones I have are too yellow/too gold), so I just used white thread to quilt this one instead. I decided to use a red solid fat quarter to make bias binding for this quilt.

Zippidee do dah -- a finished baby quilt!

Progress Potpourri {Borders, Blocks, and Batting}

I didn't have a ton of motivation (or time) to sew this weekend, but I did manage to get a few productive things done, even if it wasn't just finishing a quilt.

First, I made bias binding from a fat quarter and added it to a baby quilt that I quilted *last* week. I am hand stitching the binding by hand, so expect that finish later this week or early next week.

Next, I used the backing cut-offs from the aforementioned baby quilt as the (first) border of my Ribbons quilt.

I maximized the width of border I could add using this fabric (2.25" was what my scraps would allow) and now I will decide if I will add another border or not. I have one brown and green fabric that might work, but I think I want something blue for the border so I will need to go shopping.

Next, I pulled out the scraps from my Baseball Baby Quilts. I had strip pieced these quilts, so I actually had rather large strip pieced chunks left over! I found that I could undo a few seams and end up with four 16" blocks. 

I pieced these together and used the last bit of the remaining white print as a border. I still have some of these fabrics left, probably enough of to make a small table runner or topper. I will probably donate this quilt once finished. This is a small quilt -- only about 37" square.

Finally, I layered and basted my Radiant Jewel quilt. I ordered the backing fabric for this quilt about a month ago. The fabric is actually from a holiday line from Robert Kaufman but is just a black and metallic gold marble print, which looks great with the other fabrics of the quilt, which are also RK prints (just very, very old!). I have enough to also use it for the binding.

In this picture, you can also see something else -- the black batting! I got a black queen-sized batting from Hobbs in one of my Island Batik Ambassador boxes this year and I used a sizable chunk of the batting for my Plus Sign quilt in May.  I pieced the batting scraps together (I had two large pieces of the batting to work with) and was able to layer and pin this quilt on Saturday. 

That was slightly for naught because I do not have a thread color in my stash that I am thrilled to use with this quilt. I am thinking either a goldish cream like the fabric in the center of the stars -or- a lavender-pink like the background fabric, but leaning towards a goldish-cream. I think I would get more mileage out of cream thread. What do you think? Pink or cream?

Moxi Charm Baby Quilt {Finished Quilt}

After the short detour as a result of running out of thread, I finished my Four Squared baby quilt!

Once my thread arrived, I was able to finish up the quilting in about five minutes!

For the binding, I used the leftover fabric from the backing. I like to cut a 2.25" binding, and for this quilt, I sewed the binding to the front by machine and hand stitched it to the back.

I really am wishing that I would have had another charm pack or two to make this quilt bigger and keep it for myself! But I'm sure that this will end up snuggled by one of our friends' babies eventually!
