Summer Solstice {Finished Quilt}

While I technically finished this on New Year's Eve, this is my first finish share of 2017! My Summer Solstice quilt is completed!

I made this as a part of Melissa at Happy Quilting's Summer Solstice QAL last summer. I finished the quilt top in September with the QAL schedule, but put it aside because I wasn't ready to quilt it. As you might have seen on Instagram, I pieced my backing and was able to do the pin basing the week after Christmas and I did all of the quilting and binding on New Year's Eve.

For the quilting I did a meander with leaves to echo the leaves in the prints. I used an orchid thread for the quilting. White thread seemed like it wouldn't bend well on the front since the background is magenta and magenta seemed like it would show up too much on the green and white fabrics, so orchid it was. I did find the exact shade that I wanted, but it did take a little bit of searching and comparing. Most of the threads were either too pink or too purple!

For the backing, I pieced the remainder of the white print with a coordinating black floral print that I didn't end up using in the quilt and found an additional chartreuse print from my stash. It's always so nice to not have to buy a backing!

For the binding, I didn't have enough of any of the remaining prints (originally I was going to use the black print from the backing, oops), so I used a magenta geometric print fabric from my stash for the binding. I hand stitched this one to the back while watching movies, which is one of my favorite things to do!

Groovy Wishes -- Finally Finished!

It might have taken a year and a half since the Wishes BOM with the Fat Quarter Shop finished, but I am finally finished with my version of the Wishes quilt!

Introducing Groovy Wishes!

You can check out all of my posts about this quilt here. I used Kona Charcoal as my background and the majority of my fabrics came from the Cabana Blooms collection with a few others mixed in.

I went back and forth and back and forth about if I was going to quilt this myself or not, but ultimately decided against it. It is pantograph quilted with a winding feather pattern. I used a pink leafy print from my stash for the binding.

I had so much fun taking this one to the park and taking pictures! Unfortunately the grass was still wet so I didn't get quite as many full quilt shots as I would have liked, but this little bridge worked out just perfectly.

For the backing, I used all of the leftover pieces from my fabrics and sewed them together into a big strip, then cut the strip in half and sewed the halves together, and then cut the strip in half one last time and sewed it together again. While it probably should have been big enough for the backing based on square inches, it was too square -- it was not quite long enough for this twin sized quilt. There's a black strip at one end to round it out.

I am wishing that I still had a twin bed to put this quilt on! I might just have to cuddle with it on the couch instead.

Finished Blitzen Basketcase Quilt

It only took three years. but this quilt is finally finished! You can check out finish #1 and finish #2 from this week too!

This quilt has been three years in the making and I finished the top over a year ago! This is the problem when your preferred long arm quilter is in Michigan!

The border has a leafy vine and the blocks have a scroll work pattern in each block! I am so happy with how this one turned out!

The border is one of the larger scale prints from the line and the backing is one of the green smaller scale prints.

I also used the backing fabric for the binding -- it gives a great green pop around the outside of the red border!

The fabric is Blitzen by Basic Grey and the pattern is Basketcase by Cluck, Cluck, Sew!

Lovely quilting!

Finished August Wallhanging

A real, live finish!

I was able to finish up the satin stitching Tuesday night, did the quilting on Wednesday night, and added the pockets and bound it last night!

And ta-da!

I did a curly swirly meander for the quilting, similar to what I did for this baby quilt, but on a smaller scale. Here are some close up shots of the satin stitching and the quilting:

Flowers... I did end up using bright yellow, but I am happy with how it stands out!

For the backing and the hanging pockets I used a stashed fabric that I had a yard of. For the binding I used a large scale polka dot print that has lavender and white dots on a purple background -- absolutely perfect for this project!

No puckers! Wahoo!

I'm very excited to hang this one up in my kitchen today!

Lazy Sundays Quilt -- Blogger's Quilt Festival

I really need to keep better track of my projects' statuses because this baby has been sitting quilted for months in our apartment and it only needed the binding put on it! Embarassing! Based on the last time I posted about this quilt, it looks like I finished the quilt last January, sent it to the long arm quilter with my mom one of the times she visited in May or June last year, and she brought it back to me when she came in November for Thanksgiving and has been sitting in my sewing space just waiting for me since then. Alison, get your life together!

I'm also sharing this quilt as a part of the spring Blogger's Quilt Festival in the Large Quilt Category!

Anyways, while my mom was here visiting, I was able to get this baby bound and put on our bed! Without further ado...

This quilt came from one of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts in Quiltmaker magazine with some modifications. This was a twin sized pattern and I added extra wide borders on two sides to make it more square for a queen sized bed. Here are all of the previous posts on this quilt.

100% of the fabric used for piecing the blocks came from my stash! The periwinkle print is Basic Grey but I couldn't tell you the line, the pink print is from the Somersault line, and the peach background is from the City Girl line. The rest I have no idea! Everything was pulled to work with the periwinkle print which I had three yards of!

The binding is a smaller scale flora Moda print (don't know the line off the top of my head) that I had originally bought as a backing for another quilt but wasn't big enough for that project. This is the first large quilt that I've bound completely by machine! The last large quilt I finished was my argyle quilt, but I hand finished the binding for that one.

The quilting is a scroll-type pantograph design that is called "fleur de lis" -- to me it doesn't look like a fleur de lis but whatever. It looks like curly clouds to me. The backing is extra wide off white backing fabric and hopefully you can see the quilting a little clearer on the back than on the front.

This quilt has already taken up residence on my bed! It's a good feeling to make a "stash quilt" where the only things specifically purchased for this project were the batting and the backing!

Monkey Shine Stars Finished Quilt

I didn't really intend for this to end up being "secret sewing" project, but it ended up that way this time around. I had this quilt all planned out and then realized that I needed to get it done a lot sooner than I had originally expected! (The baby shower is literally today.)

At both of my jobs, I have a co-worker having a baby boy in April. I decided that I would make similar quilts using fabric bundles I had on hand just to make things easier.

I managed to get all of the blocks made on the last time that I had a snow day. I was able to get the whole thing sashed together that week as well. I took zero in progress pictures because I was all like OMG MUST MAKE AND FINISH FAST!

If you follow me on Instagram, you saw a preview of the quilt a few days ago when I posted this picture after I got the quilting done on Sunday when I was snowed in:

And here's the whole quilt -- finished and bound! I actually hand stitched the binding to the back yesterday because we had another snow day. I haven't done one in a while and it was quite relaxing!

I love this sock money fabric so much. I bought two fat quarter bundles in the "boy" colorway and two in the "girl" colorway. Basically every baby quilt I make for a long while is going to be this fabric.

For the quilting, I used light blue thread because the fabrics had both white and a light tan, so white thread and off white thread looked funny against the fabrics. You can't hardly tell it's blue unless you look close, but I'm very happy with it.

I did a larger bubbly meander for this one and had only a few thread issues which was a miracle! And there are zero puckers on the back. Small miracles!

I bound it with a piece of brown on brown fabric that was the backing on another quilt (I forget which). My original intention was to turn one of the fat quarters into bias binding, but even though this quilt is 40 inches square, a fat quarter isn't big enough. Things you learn!

The backing is brown snuggle flannel. I love the way that flannel makes a baby quilt so much more cuddly and soft. I also love how easy it is to FMQ with a flannel baking.

Keep your eyes peeled for an upcoming tutorial on how to use any 12 inch blocks to make a 40" baby quilt so that you don't have to piece the backing!

Like I mentioned above, the baby shower is actually today so I'm glad I got it finished up in time!

Finished February Hearts Wall Hanging

Another little finish this week -- hooray!

I managed to finish another one of my calendar wall hangings for February.

The inside of the background is various baby pinks and the outer ring are various hot pinks. I cut out X, O, and heart shapes to decorate the outer ring in reds and burgundies.

I actually did all of this satin stitching the same time that I did the finishing satin stitching on my January snowman just so that I could get more done while my settings were just right!

I patchwork pieced my large heart together using large pieces of red and pink scraps from my scrap boxes and trimmed it down to size after I ironed on the fusible web.

For this one, I had a yard of a red on red tonal leaf print that I used for both the backing and the binding -- with a little to spare! I'll probably end up using it for my September apple -- when I get there!

For the FMQ on this one, I challenged myself and used two different filler patterns -- one within the heart, and a different one everywhere else. I used two patterns from the Free Motion Quilting Project -- Heart Paisley in the big heart and Hearts and Spirals elsewhere. Doing the hearts and spirals pattern was great practice for travel stitching which I have not done a lot of in the other things I have FMQ'd.

Here's the whole front and back. I used white thread on the front and back.

My FMQ is far from perfect but I have made so much progress in 2014 with my FMQ skills! Hooray for me!

I also used the red backing for the binding and the hanging pockets and used a decorative stitch to machine bind the wall hanging. I used red thread for this on the front so that it would blend a little bit better, but I still used white on the back since it isn't going to show.
