Top Spin {Progress + Blocks}

When secret sewing takes up a lot of your time, sometimes its good to bust out and work on something random for a while! This weekend I was able to finish an upcoming secret sewing project (hooray) and then spent some time working on putting together the first eight blocks of my Top Spin quilt. 

I have been making the HSTs for my Top Spin blocks (pattern by Melissa of Happy Quilting on Moda Bake Shop) as a leader and ender project for about eight months. Sometimes I've been better and worse about remembering to use the leader and enders, but I think I've made just about all of the small and medium sized HST units and have started on the pile of squares for the large HST units.

I also picked out the fabric to use as the background -- its the same fabric that I used for the backing of my two Pinwheel Pals quilts. I'm planning to make my quilt twin sized. Here are the blocks piled up and laid out before I sewed them.

I was able to make eight blocks with the limited number of large HSTs that I have, but it was good to finally get a few blocks made.

I will need 48 blocks for a twin sized quilt without a border, so that means I'm already 17% of the way done with my blocks! I have two different large chunks of fabric in my stash that I plan to use for the backing and the binding.

One of the other things I did this weekend was clean out one of my "catch all" bins and sort some of the smaller scraps from the bin into my scrap boxes to "refresh" them! Here's an action shot of fabric all over my living room floor:

I also sorted out some of my Christmas fabrics because I'm also being strongly, strongly tempted to participate in the I Wish You A Merry Quilt Along! I want to try to resist, but that might not be possible. :)

WIP Wednesday: Piles and Triangles

I have all of my triangles for the Triangle Quilt Along cut! Hooray!

I am so excited to start putting this together soon! Join the Triangle QAL if you haven't yet!

I also undertook a project of re-folding all of my fabric and reorganizing my craft shelves and clearing out things I won't use before my husband and I move to Maryland in less than two months (!!!!). 

Here's everything pre-re-folding and sorting all over my floor:

I got everything refolded this weekend while my husband watched the hockey game (napped) and I was able to "Frankenstein" together that pile of batting scraps one evening. See that pile of plastic zipper bags? Does anyone else have a stash like that? Or is there something wrong with me?

It's like there's twice as much space as there was before! Holy wow! Before every single cube was full and there was piles on top of the rack! Now there isn't anything on the top and I can find anything I might be looking for.

I'm still trying to decide if I am going to destash anything before we move, so stay posted. I will definitely let people know if I have anything good to sell or trade. :)

Stopping Points

This weekend, I didn't end up getting a ton done, but I did manage to get to some significant progress points for a couple projects.

I finished the 10th New York Beauty Block and remade the 3rd one because I wasn't happy with the way the layout. Here they are together:

So now I need to make a final decision about the layout to see how many more blocks (or half blocks...maybe) I will end up needing to make. I'm actually getting to the point of having used up a lot of the fabric that I started with so I'm pretty sure this one will end up as a wall hanging or throw.

I also received the 6 storage boxes that I ordered from Joann that were the one day special this past week because they are the spring colors. I think the colors are fantastic. Four of the boxes are now home to projects in progress and two are full of my scrap fabric. Huzzah for organization!

Tonight I made the final argyle block! Now just to wait for my Chocolate Kona to show up on my doorstep (hopefully tomorrow!) for the setting triangles and spend hours figuring out how to mix up all of the blocks so that the same colors don't end up next to each other.
