Mosaic Mystery Quilt {Quilt Top}

It's been a LONG time since I posted about this project -- last year in fact! The construction directions were released in January, I printed them out, and only now finally managed to finish the quilt top.

Because my burgundy fabrics were cut from three different fabrics and not from one fabric, I arranged the units so that a single fabric was used for an entire star. I ended up needing to make a few extra units as I put the rows together, but I had plenty of extra fabric. I didn't end up doing that with the pink fabrics and placed them randomly throughout the quilt top.

Going through my old blog posts, it looks like my original plan was to cut the additional pink fat quarters that I have (in the same fabrics I used in the quilt) into strips to make a scrappy, chunky border. I'm not sure if I want to do this or not but I don't have anything else left from this kit that would be enough yardage for a border. (I do, however, have another burgundy fabric that will work for the binding.) So this week I'll be deciding on that. It is probably big enough as is, but I might as well use the rest of those fat quarters.

What do you think? What have you been sewing this week?

Mosaic Mystery Quilt {Gaggle of Gooses}

I guess that this week just happens to be "mystery quilt catch up week" before my holiday travels!

I was also able to squeeze in the December clues for the Mosaic Mystery Quilt. The directions for December are actually a conglomeration of a few different flying geese and flying geese-esque units.

There are right and left facing half flying geese in two different color combinations, three sets of full flying geese units, and a few half square triangles.

Because I am using fat quarter cuts for my Fabric B and Fabric C choices (burgundies and pinks), I made my half geese in matching pairs. We'll see if the way that I divvied up my fabric choices with my units will work well in the final quilt design. If I decide that I need to make additional or replacement units, I have extra fabric of all four of the pink fabrics I used. I might not have quite as much extra burgundy to work with, but I will make it work.

Back goes all of my units and fabrics into their rather large project bag -- in January we will start making blocks and assembling the quilt!

Mosaic Mystery Quilt {Diagonal Blocks}

I had some bonus sewing time last night and I decided to knock out the November clue for the Mosaic Mystery Quilt.

This month, our assignment was to make "diagonal blocks" and my units use my scrappy pink fabrics. I made four units in each of the four colors.

Here are my four sets of units thus far.

I still have a lot of cut pieces and parts that haven't been touched yet, so I would guess that we will have at least two more months' worth of piecing before the quilt top will be revealed. This is just a guess, but I am liking how my units are coming together thus far.

Mosaic Mystery Quilt {Squares and Triangles}

It's time to check in with my progress on the Mosaic Mystery Quilt hosted by Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs!

I didn't post an update in September, so I decided that I would combine my September and October clue progress together in one post.

September's clue was to make stitch-and-flip "house" blocks. These were very quick and easy! Since I am using fat quarters instead of yardage, I used three different fabrics for the stitch and flip squares, so half of the units have the pink and burgundy scroll fabric, a quarter of the units have the burgundy mottled print, and a quarter of the units have the dark pink Fairy Frost.

An aside: I absolutely LOVE Fairy Frost. I had a lot of scraps of it years ago and used a lot of the scraps in my Harry Potter quilt, which I realize has never actually been shared as a finish, and I will do that eventually.

For October, our assignment was to make two different sets of square-in-a-square (SIAS) units. These were quick and easy as well; it seems like I have done so much itty bitty piecing lately -- it's so nice to work on something with bigger piecing! All of the green/brown and background fabric SIAS units are the same; there are two each of each of the four different pink fabrics for the pink/background SIAS units.

Now the long wait to November begins!

Mosaic Mystery Quilt {Cutting}

As alluded to in my latest Brutal Honesty post, I am participating in the Mosaic Mystery Quilt hosted by Cheryl of Meadow Mist Designs!

As I have done for many QALs in the past, I have pulled all of the fabric for this quilt from my stash. This time, that comes with a slight caveat -- these fabrics came all together as a kit for another pattern! The kit was given to me by someone downsizing some of their stash and I gladly accepted!

The majority of the kit was fat quarters and half yard cuts, in different shades of burgundy, pink, green, and brown. The large piece of green-on-white print that I will be using for my background actually seems to be intended for the backing of the kit pattern based on the yardage listings.

For my fabric A, I picked a half yard piece of a green, brown, and white print. For my fabric B, I pulled four burgundy fat quarters (but actually only cut into three). For Fabric C, I pulled eight fat quarters of pinks -- two each of four different fabrics. I cut one of each fabric for the piecing, and have the others set aside to maybe use as the border.

I didn't even use all of the fabrics from the kit! I have another large cut of burgundy which is large enough for the binding as well as a few more fat quarters. For now, I'll be sticking with the above fabrics for my quilt, but reserve the right to change my mind and mix some of the other fabrics in.

Here are all of my cut fabrics:

For the burgundy fabrics and the pink fabrics, I did actually use multiple fat quarters, but since I cut the fat quarters stacked four each other, you can only see the top of the stacks. I absolutely love the background fabric and wish I had a whole bolt of it!

Yesterday the first cutting directions came out and that will have to wait until next week (at the earliest) since we are traveling this weekend for a wedding.
