Groovy Wishes -- Finally Finished!

It might have taken a year and a half since the Wishes BOM with the Fat Quarter Shop finished, but I am finally finished with my version of the Wishes quilt!

Introducing Groovy Wishes!

You can check out all of my posts about this quilt here. I used Kona Charcoal as my background and the majority of my fabrics came from the Cabana Blooms collection with a few others mixed in.

I went back and forth and back and forth about if I was going to quilt this myself or not, but ultimately decided against it. It is pantograph quilted with a winding feather pattern. I used a pink leafy print from my stash for the binding.

I had so much fun taking this one to the park and taking pictures! Unfortunately the grass was still wet so I didn't get quite as many full quilt shots as I would have liked, but this little bridge worked out just perfectly.

For the backing, I used all of the leftover pieces from my fabrics and sewed them together into a big strip, then cut the strip in half and sewed the halves together, and then cut the strip in half one last time and sewed it together again. While it probably should have been big enough for the backing based on square inches, it was too square -- it was not quite long enough for this twin sized quilt. There's a black strip at one end to round it out.

I am wishing that I still had a twin bed to put this quilt on! I might just have to cuddle with it on the couch instead.

Quilt Stats:
Name: Groovy Wishes
Pattern: Wishes BOM
Size: 78x62 inches
Fabrics: Mainly Cabana Blooms, others mixed in
Quilting; Winding feather pantograph
Backing: Leftover piecing fabrics

Lately...catching up!

The rough thing about working two jobs and trying to keep up with this blog hasn't been the loss of sewing time (for the most part) but has been the loss of good picture taking hours due to being gone during all the good hours!

I finally got some sewing and picture taking time in yesterday so I'm here to share some updates!

My scrappy neighborhood has grown from five houses to ten!

The bad news is that I've exhausted my light blue fabrics, that is, at least those with pieces big enough to make a whole house. I'm not quite sure what this says about me as a quilter.

I've also been starting to get my January 2015 Stash Bee blocks in the mail! I made the four little blocks you see in the upper right and left hand corners and I think I will need to make a few more small stars as well once I get the rest of the blocks from my hive mates.

I'm very happy with all of the blocks overall! Lots of light blue so far (go figure!) and some beautiful blues!

I also have finished the top of my Wishes Quilt!

I loved being able to use lots of scraps for the border! I have about a fat quarter left of each fabric, so I am trying to figure out if I can use the fabric to make a scrappy backing for this quilt.

Don't forget to nominate your favorite blocks for our QCQAL round 2! Check out more information about the QCQAL here!

Today both Park Ranger Husband and I are on snow day so I'll hopefully be getting some more sewing time in today! (After I clean the kitchen...maybe.)

Happy Sewing!

November Wishes Block

Well, I'm not making a lot of progress on anything else, so I figured today I would show my November Wishes QAL block.

Just December to go now! I can't wait to see this one all come together! :)

October Stash Bee and Wishes Blocks

I'm finally getting back into the groove after being gone for a week! My sister's wedding was wonderful and then we got to spend a few days at my mother in law's house in Ohio which was nice as well. Now, back to the sewing and job hunting!

This is our hive's last month for the Stash Bee, and Sara requested a crazy quilt block. I will fully admit that I definitely struggled with this block. Crazy quilts are just not my thing. I think it turned out ok, but I don't see myself making a crazy quilt for myself any time soon.

Here's my October Wishes block -- Idaho Beauty!

I just love a good sawtooth star and this block is no exception! It took a little bit of planning to make sure that the star points were all the right colors in the right places, but overall it was fun and easy!

Also, keep your eyes peeled because Stash Bee 2015 sign ups are less than a week away!

Wishes Block #9 -- Dove in the Window and Sew Kitschy Block #9 - Betty's Kitchen

Happy Wednesday, everybody! I'm on a major roll with posts this week! Hooray!

Today I'm sharing my September BOM blocks for the Fat Quarter Shop Wishes QAL and Quiet Play's Sew Kitschy QAL.

This month's block for the Wishes QAL is called Dove in the Window! Working on this quilt always makes me so happy because of the bright colors.

This month is the LAST month for this year's Sew Kitschy QAL and I am so sad! I am probably going to have to buy the Sew Retro and Sew Retro 2 Bundles now. Knowing me, if and when I do that, I'll binge paper piece them in one sitting!

The last block is Betty in her kitchen!

Silly me didn't get a picture of all 9 of my Sew Kitschy blocks together yet! I'll hopefully have that posted soon.

Have a lovely September day!

Wishes BOM #8 -- Mrs. Taft's Choice

It's time again for the Wishes BOM! All of the tutorials are still available so join us!

This month's block is called Mrs. Taft's Choice.

I'm already seeing that I'm going to end up with a LOT of extra fabric. I think I might try to make the checkered row on the back side bigger and use up more of my fabric or just piece it together for a scrappy back.

Check out everyone's blocks in the Flickr group!

Wishes Block #7 -- Courthouse Lawn

It's Wishes block time again! This month's block is Courthouse Lawn and it reminds me of a granny square block in some ways.

Not quite as fast to come together as last month's Susannah block, but still simple and fun!

Tutorials for blocks 1-7 are still available if you're interested in joining in on the fun!

Since this is a short post, here's Little Bunny Clara napping in her box.

Happy Tuesday!

It's the beginning of the month, so that means it is time for us to indulge in all of our BOMs!

Here's my version of Susannah from the Wishes QAL at Fat Quarter shop!

I love these big blocks with easy piecing! If you haven't joined in yet, all of the blocks are still up!

PS. Like Honey, Bunny, and Doll's Facebook page -- there might just be a SALE coming up this weekend!

Wishes Quilt Along Block #5 -- Log Cabin

Happy Saturday!!

Another day, another BOM block!

This month's Wishes Block is a Log Cabin. It was so simple to put together and sometimes you just need a break from making half square triangles, you know?

Check out everyone's blocks over in the Flickr group!

Wishes Quilt Along Block #3: Annie's Choice

It's the beginning of the month, so it means it's time to binge on all of the QALs that have new blocks out!

I cut all of my pieces for the March Wishes QAL block on Friday night and got it all sewn together on Saturday night. I knew that I wanted to use the large floral with the green background as the main "pinwheel" fabric, so I chose the orange and pink weave-y wavy print fabrics as the outer triangles.

The block tutorials are all still up if you want to start yours now!

Wishes Quilt Along Block #2

The second block for the Fat Quarter Shop Wishes Quilt Along is now available!

This month's block is called "Double Windmill". Here's my block which I made last night!

It's so hard to wait for the next block to come out! Here's to having {lots} of other WIPs to work on...

Wishes Quilt Along Block #1

Are you participating in the Fat Quarter Shop Wishes Quilt Along?

Originally, I wasn't planning to do this one, but my sister decided over Christmas that she was going to do it, and after seeing how cute her block turned out, I had to join in too!

I am using half yards rather than fat quarters and am using the pieces that I have of the Cabana Blooms collection that I got ages ago on clearance on Fabric.com. I have added in a few other fabric pieces from here and there and am using Kona Coal for my background.

January's block is the Flying Kite Block. Instead of using 8 different fabrics, I used 2 each of four different fabrics.

I will also say that I did not make my block as directed. I cut my background triangles as directed and then used them as a "template" to trim down the triangles I cut from 6 inch squares cut diagonally once (I ended up trimming off about 1/8 th of an inch). Why cut four triangles and not use three of them? Why cut a nearly 8 x 6 inch piece and discard a whole bunch of it? My block ended up perfectly sized without wasting an excess of fabric. I certainly cannot afford the luxury of over-cutting or throwing good fabric away just because it makes for a simpler pattern.

Rant over. There's a great Facebook group and a Flickr group to share progress and ogle blocks, if you so desire!
