Donuts {Finished Quilt}

Writing about this quilt makes me hungry! I took this quilt top with me to Michigan in August and my mom did some simple meandering on her mid-arm. It's so nice to have this finished!

The grey thread that my mom used has a slight variegation to it which gives another fun dimension to this quilt!

I love looking at this quilt and thinking about where some of the scraps originated! The fish print in the dusty blue block below came from a scrap bag I bought on vacation in Amish country last October.

For the backing, I picked a teal dot extra wide backing fabric. My mom also trimmed the quilt and bound it for me using the same backing fabric.

It's nice to have a few quilts with a slightly more manly feel to them!

And unlike Wednesday when I was fighting the wind with my Quarter Cabin quilt, the weather was cooperative today and I wasn't worried about my quilt blowing away!

Once again, a huge thank you goes to Amanda Jean of Crazy Mom Quilts for including this amazing quilt in your book! I am so happy to have another quilt finished for this year!

Sea Glass Donuts {Finished Quilt Top}

I finally got back to work on my Donuts quilt! This pattern is from Amanda Jean's book No Scrap Left Behind. (not an affiliate link)

I had finished up all of the block sections quite a bit ago and just had dawdled about getting the grey solid for the background. When I needed black for my Breezy Blooms quilt, I also told my mom to send me some yardage of whatever shade of light grey she had on hand in the Etsy shop. She sent me three pieces of Kona Shadow that totaled the yardage that I needed.

This quilt definitely has to be laid out in advance before construction since the "donuts" interlink. I didn't lay out the quilt in its entirety all at once, but I did lay out the block sections in the order that I would like them to appear in the quilt.

Because the rings interconnect, I found it easiest to lay out one ring at a time to get the blocks arranged in the way that I liked so that the repeated fabrics were spaced out in a pleasing manner.

As you might be able to guess from the picture -- these are big blocks!

I found that it was easiest to put together the top two rows of each block, sew the block halves into rows, and then the remaining block parts would be used in the next row connected to the next row of blocks. (I highly suggest getting Amanda Jean's book even if it's for JUST this pattern.) Part of this was thinking this would make it easier to stop and start on this pattern, but I got started on it and got it all together in just two days (with a break for some FMQ!)

The top is now complete!

Another quilt added to the very large pile of things that I need to quilt or have quilted! Being that I'll be flying to Michigan next Saturday (!!!!) at least a few of these tops will be taken to be long arm quilted there. I'm leaning towards having this one long arm quilted and I'm trying to decide on what color I might want to use for the backing. Another perk of visiting the Honey, Bunny, and Doll Quilts "home office" in Michigan is in-person access to all of the Etsy shop fabric for color matching.

Happy Friday! I am counting down the days until retreat and a few days off of work!

Donuts {Finished Block Sections}

Once I got to a stopping point with my Double Delight quilt, I pulled out my Donuts block sections to assess how much more I needed to do. I found that I needed five more sets of block sections in mainly lighter shades of blue, aqua, and green.

I made one light aqua, one more medium aqua, one medium-to-dark teal greens, one light green, and one light blue set of block sections.

Now all 18 sets of block sections are complete!

This quilt is one that is going to need to be laid out strategically and it would be helpful if I had a design wall for constructing the quilt. I am pretty sure that I am going to use a grey shade of Kona as the background but I'll have to see how much I'll need before I decide what color.

This quilt was a good choice for my slightly larger scraps and strips, but I ended up with a lot of little bits and bobs from trimming the blocks and I'm not exactly sure how best to use them. They could easily make some scrappy slabs, but they could also work for some of the other projects in No Scrap Left Behind. And so the scrap cycle continues!

Baker's Dozen {Donuts Quilt}

I have made a few block sets here and there for my Donuts quilt (pattern from No Scrap Left Behind) and now I'm up to 13 block sets out of the 18 total that I need for the quilt.

I made mainly aqua and green blocks since I had made quite a few darker blue blocks. Each big block is made up of two "diagonal" blocks and four "straight" blocks.

All of my sets look great together.

Now that my On Ringo Lake top is done, I can reclaim those aqua and teal fabrics for my Donuts quilt. I think that I'll need to make two more lighter blue blocks, two aqua blocks, and one more green block. Thank you, Amanda Jean, for such a fun pattern!

Happy Wednesday to all! I'm also plugging away on finishing up the hand binding on my Gathering quilt in the evenings this week -- only one corner to go!

Donuts {Couldn't Resist}

Given that I've accomplished some finishes recently, I allowed my self to start something new! Amanda Jean Nyberg's newest book has a pattern called "Donuts (the size of your head)" which immediately caught my eye. I got this book as a birthday present in June, so I'm impressed I made it all the way to November without starting a project from the book!

Amanda Jean's original quilt is a rainbow, but I decided to use blue, green and teals. I had originally planned for this to be a new leader and ender project, but I've found it easier to get my fabrics out for this project, make a few sets of units, and then put it away until I've added some new scraps to my pile. I'll just have to start a different project for leaders and enders. :)

I've also been strip piecing the "straight" units -- sort of, depending on what kind of scraps I have in a particular color. I've been using the strips longer than 7 inches for the "straight" blocks first, and then making the "diagonal" blocks. Here's a slate blue set of pieces in progress:

Once a section is 6.5 inches wide or more, I cross cut it to 6.5 inches, then rotate the block 90 degrees and trim to 6.5 inches square.

I usually have part of my strip set left over -- but usually not the full width -- so I will use that as the starting piece of a new block. Here are my three other slate blocks:

For the diagonal blocks, I use my 6.5 inch square ruler to approximate what strips are good fits for the angled parts of the block and continue adding until my ruler is covered with a significant overhang. These get trimmed to 7 inches because they'll eventually become the HST portions of the blocks.

With the rings being interconnected, my plan is to make all 18 sets of blocks before doing any sort of assembly. I'm already halfway done with the block sets -- only 9 to go! My next round of block making will need to be a few green blocks.

This project isn't using quite as many small scraps as I had originally hoped given that most of the strips used need to be at least 6.5 inches long, but I am having a lot of fun with the quick results! I'll have enough block sets for a quilt top soon!

PS. I would really love your input on what kind of quilt along to host next year! There's a post on the Honey, Bunny, and Doll Facebook page!
