Fire Pit Quilt {Stash Statement Blog Hop}

I am so excited to share the quilt that I made as part of the blog hop to celebrate Kelly's book, Stash Statement!

If you are like me and have a lot of scraps in a lot of sizes, this is a fun book to help make something beautiful from the scraps that sometimes tend to linger in our boxes, bins, and baskets!

While a lot of the quilts in this book caught my eye, the quilt that I made from the book is called Fire Pit! Here's Kelly's original quilt:

She used warm colors and cool colors with white and grey solids to create a fun geometric quilt. I immediately knew that I wanted to use this pattern to make a scrappy Christmas-y quilt.

The problem with Christmas scraps (at least, for me!) is that I tend to skip over them when I am working on non-Christmas scrap quilts and over the years, I've collected quite a few Christmas scraps and this was the perfect way to use them! I'm not the most proficient improviser so I found it less daunting to work from a single color rather than multiple colors for my pieced units.

I made my quilt slightly smaller than Kelly's original version. I also used a white background, but I used brown jelly roll strips from my scraps instead of the grey fabric in the original. Doesn't that make it look like a mod forest?

For the quilting, I used white thread and quilted large swirls. I even fancy-matched the pattern on the backing so that it is nearly invisible!

My quilt ended up 48" square and is going to be perfect for some snuggling by the Christmas tree!

I just loved being able to sprinkle in the Christmas fabrics into this quilt.

I used the backing cut on the bias for the binding. It used slightly more fabric, but I think the effect is delightful.

I hope that this version is inspiring to you! I really enjoyed making it and I'm looking forward to making some of the other quilts in Kelly's book!

Scrappy Therapy {September Stash Bee}

For September, Amanda from Fabric Engineer is our Queen Bee in the Stash Bee. She requested super scrappy improv blocks that she plans to use as the building blocks of a chevron quilt! This was very exciting to me because my scrap bag (aka my "bag of shame") doesn't zip closed anymore!

Sewing the pieces and parts together for these blocks was so theraputic - sew, press, trim, sew, press, trim! I used my 12" cutting board as a guide -- once my piece was big enough to almost cover the center, I trimmed to Amanda's requested size of 9 inches square. I ended up making four blocks:

Despite my good intentions of making a sizable dent in my scrap bag, it is still remarkably full, but the bag does close now! It's fun to look at these blocks and pick out some of the notable fabrics from particular projects -- some of which I made over four years ago!

March Stash Bee Blocks

This month our Queen Bee is Michelle from Factotum of Arts and she requested that we make stained glass like blocks with white sashing that she's going to put together in a pretty awesome quilt!

I always struggle with making "improv" modern style blocks. It's just not my forte, but Michelle's tutorial in the link above made it so much easier for my orderly brain to follow. 

I made one block in greens and one block with a mixture of red, yellow, and orange.

Hooray for bee blocks that make a dent (even if it's tiny!) in my scrap boxes!

February Stash Bee Blocks

This month, Pauline requested us to make wonky houses. Normally, I am not much into wonky blocks and improv piecing, but this was very fun and liberating! And I used basically all scraps for the blocks. Major win.
