Split Stars {Finished Quilt}

While I made this quilt top all the way back in August, I didn't get it finished until November. 

This quilt was a gift for our friends who also had a baby boy this fall!

I did a simple meander for the quilting and used the coordinating fabrics for the border and the binding. For the backing, I used blue and white plaid flannel.

James let me borrow his crib to model the quilt I made for his new best friend!

Open Wide 2.0 Bags in Floralicious {It's In The Bag Blog Hop}

 Today is my day to share for the It's In The Bag Blog Hop, sponsored by Island Batik and By Annie!

The collection I got to use for my project is the new Floralicious collection!

If you remember back to my unboxing post from this summer, I got all of the pieces and parts to make a set of the Open Wide 2.0 bags from By Annie!

I have long avoided three dimensional sewing, but this was my chance to try something totally new and I am so happy with how the bags turned out!

I started with the largest size bag and worked my way through one entire bag before starting on the next one. I used a lot of different colors of Aurifil thread too! Each bag had a main color, lining color, and accent color designated for each particular size.

I free motion quilted meanders for all of the bags. It was a different feeling for sure quilting the foam stabilizer rather than batting! 

I had never ever sewn a zipper before so that was also a big adventure! I really appreciated how clear the directions were in each step -- especially for someone with a fear of three-dimensional sewing and zippers like me!

One very nice aspect of these bags is that they perfectly nestle inside of one another for storage if you make yourself the entire set! 

Now I am totally addicted to the idea of making more of these bags as gifts! I have quite a bit of fabric and supplies left over other than the zippers, so I am going to have to buy some more zippers to make more of these bags (maybe in some sets!)

Thank you to Island Batik, By Annie, and Aurifil for graciously supplying the supplies for this project! I had so much fun making these and if you are like me and things like zippers freak you out -- definitely try out a By Annie's bag pattern!

Best of Moda Bake Shop -- Pillow Parade Hop {Finished Pillow and More Big News}

 Yesterday was my day to share on the Best of Moda Bake Shop Pillow Parade on Instagram, so today I thought I would share my finished pillow!

If you have the book, I made a pillow out of a single block featured in the quilt without additional sashing. I made the block using scraps left over from the original quilt and added in a solid green background fabric that coordinated with the prints in the collection. 

I used some scrap batting and scrap white solid fabric to quilt the the block for the front of the pillow.

I quilted the block with the same chrysanthemum motif as I used for the quilt. I then trimmed the quilt block into a square.

For the envelope back, I used the same fabric that is used for the backing for the quilt. 

Now my lovely quilt has a lovely pillow friend!

Not only did my sister have a baby in June, I am having a baby in October! This picture is from about a week ago when my nephew made his first trip to Aunt Alison's house. I have had to give up my dedicated sewing room and move my sewing space into our guest room, but I think that this compromise was definitely worth it.

I'm also planning to list some quilts for sale via Instagram later this week if you are looking for a gift or special treat for yourself!

Chrysanthemum Quilt {Finished Quilt}

I am so excited today to show off my finished Chrysanthemum quilt!

This is my June Island Batik Ambassador project -- I used fabrics from the Primo line by Ebony Love for the piecing and solid white batik for the backing. I used stash builder strips cut in half for the binding.

For the quilting, I used a peach Aurifil 50 wt. thread in both the top and bobbin. I obviously used a crysanthemum motif for the free motion quilting!

I am pretty resolved that this year there won't be a QAL given that life has been crazy busy but that this pattern will likely be the QAL for 2021. It's just that much fun of a pattern!

I did just use the white solid batik as my backing this time around because it was basically the best choice I had on hand to back this quilt. I'm guessing if you've been like me the last few months, the name of the game in the sewing room is making due with whatever you have on hand without having to go shopping!

This will likely be a keeper quilt for me because I love it just that much!

Ultimate Home Decor Blog Hop {Winter Forest Placemats + Giveaway}

Today is my day to share on the Ultimate Home Decor Blog Hop with Island Batik!

The collection that I have been sewing with is Winter Forest!

I have really enjoyed the fun wintry prints in this line!

Here are all of the fabrics in the bundle I received:

For my project, I cut 3.5" strips of each fabric to make strip pieced patchy placemats. I used the equivalent of 24 - 3.5" squares in each placemat top in a 6x4 arrangement.

I was actually able to cut enough from my strip sets to make six placemats plus a little extra! Here are the first four placemat tops sewn up and ready to be quilted!

For all of the placemats, I used the same light snowflake print for the backing and the blue bear paw print for the binding. For the quilting I used a light grey Aurifil thread to quilt meanders across each placemat. For the binding, I used the same grey thread in the bobbin, but used a cobalt blue 28 wt. Aurifil thread to do the final binding top-stitching.

While this set of wintry placemats won't get used right away, I definitely will be making more placemats this quick and easy way!

Simple Squares {Finished Quilt}

Today I'm excited to show off my finished quilt for our April Island Batik Ambassador challenge! Our theme was "creative borders and bindings".

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics, Aurifil thread, Accuquilt products, and Hobbs Batting to use and share with you!

My quilt is made entirely of 4.5" squares cut from Island Batik stash builder rolls and 4.5" strips of black solid batik to break up the inner 64-patch from the pieced outer border. 

I also used the same black solid for the backing and the binding of the quilt. The border and backing really shows off my leafy swirl quilting!

I used a variegated teal Aurifil thread for the top of the quilt and used a lighter teal in the bobbins. Some of the fabrics highlight the darker teal in the variegated thread and other fabrics show off the lighter teals! The black inner border shows off all of the quilting -- and I only used a single spool of thread throughout the whole quilt and got vastly different levels of thread contrast!

This quilt is finished and ready for snuggles! My intention is to keep this quilt for a picnic quilt (all of those dark colors will hide stains!)

Rail Fence Baby Quilt {Finished Quilt}

Yes, another finish to share today!

When I was working on my Hattie's Choice quilt that I showed off yesterday, I also prepared the binding for and sewed the binding onto my already quilted Rail Fence baby quilt.

For this quilt, I used red solid cotton for the binding since I have almost no fabric left from this bundle!

Since this quilt was already quilted and trimmed, it was quick work to add the binding to this quilt.

I also hand stitched the binding to the backing on this quilt -- this might be the "new norm" for quilting during quarantine for me!

Hattie's Choice {Finished One Die Wonder Quilt}

When last I posted about this quilt, I thought that I would be adding a border -- and then I started digging through my Island Batik stash only to realize that I only had one half yard of purple and no other pink or purple to use to finish this quilt! Oops! So instead, I decided to quilt this quilt as is -- a bitty baby quilt -- and use a neutral dot batik for the backing.

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics, Aurifil thread, Accuquilt products, and Hobbs Batting to use and share with you!

For the batting, I had a small sized Hobbs Thermore batting left over from last year's Island Batik Ambassador box which was a good fit for this quilt.

Here's the quilt post-quilting, pre-trim.

I used purple Aurifil thread in the pink and purple areas to quilt simple arch dot-to-dot style designs. In the background, I used a gold-tan Aurifil thread to quilt simple meanders.

I used my last purple half yard for the binding, as I mentioned above! For some reason, right now I have A LOT of blue and green batiks hanging around.

And voila -- a finished quilt!

Here's a close up of blocks which shows off some of the quilting a little bit better:

The backing is a dingy white-grey print, which shows off the quilting quite a lot!

I machine stitched the binding to the front of the quilt and hand stitched it to the back during our copious indoor time this weekend. Here in PA it rained the entire weekend, which was rather unwelcome after spending the week indoors working from home.

Sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

Rail Fence Baby Quilt {Quilted}

My COVID quarantine is not necessarily the boon for sewing time as it seems to be for many of the people that I follow on Instagram. I still have to work full time from home, I'm trying to exercise every day (at bare minimum, taking a walk in my neighborhood), and spend some quality time with my husband. I'm definitely not sewing every day, but a little bit most days.

But I did quilt a little something this weekend. It's not bound yet, but it is at least quilted.

Back in October, I used the scraps left over from the Baseball Baby quilts that I made in 2018 (using this pattern as the base) to make this giant rail fence baby quilt.

This quilt top used up the rest of the strip sets that I had sewn for the quilts and I had enough of the white print for a border.

Saturday morning, I whip stitched some batting scraps together so that they were big enough for this quilt top; I also used two pieces of scrap flannel left over from the backings of the Hip To Be Square quilts I made last fall for the backing of this quilt.

I did simple meanders in white thread moving from the center of the quilt out to prevent puckers, bubbles, and folds -- I love backing in flannel because it slides so well on the machine, but the little bit of extra stretch it has in comparison to regular 100% quilting cotton is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to free motion quilting.

I finished this quilting in less than an hour!

Here's a closer view that shows the quilting a little better.

While I wasn't sure I had anything to use for the binding, I found some red solid that will work perfect for the binding! I'm planning to stitch this by hand -- plenty of movie-watching time to work on hand binding these days!

Quarter Cabins in Mesa Verde {Log Cabin Blog Hop with Island Batik} + {Pattern Premiere}

Today is my day to share as part of the Island Batik Ambassador Log Cabin blog hop!

I have been hard at work on this quilt this month -- featuring the new line, Mesa Verde! As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics, Aurifil thread, Accuquilt products, and Hobbs Batting to use and share with you!

This line is a fun Western-inspired collection featuring greens, creams, golds, and browns!

For my quilt, I am using our new Honey, Bunny, and Doll pattern, Quarter Cabins, to show off these lovely fabrics! 

I used the 20 fabrics to make 25 blocks for this quilt, which finishes at 51" square.

For the quilting, I used a gold-brown Aurifil thread for the quilting and did meandering across the quilt. For the batting, I used a wool blend Hobbs Batting. Thank you to Aurifil and Hobbs Batting for sponsoring the Island Batik Ambassador program!

Frankie the bunny had to inspect the quilt after it was trimmed before the binding was added!

I used one of the dark brown prints for the binding.
