What I've Been Sewing Lately {WIP Wednesday}

Despite the fact that I have been working from home for four months as of tomorrow, that has not translated at all into extra sewing time. It's mostly translated into sleeping more and loading and unloading the dishwasher more. And we may or may not have made it through the entire Marvel movie series in that time. 

The goals in my sewing room have been two-fold since the beginning of the year: finish up WIPs and clear out scraps. The finishing up WIPs part has been wholly unsuccessful. The clearing out scraps part has actually gone relatively well. I haven't made any lately, but early on in quarantine, I made oodles of my Rainbow Snippet blocks. 

I haven't really posted about it but I have actually been making masks. I've made four "batches" -- the first batch was for us, a few of my husband's coworkers, and some friends, the second was a batch for our church when they reopened for socially distanced services, and the third and fourth batches have been for my work. I've used the Sarah Maker tutorial with ties for all of them, but usually I make my ties slightly shorter.

This has been a great medium-to-large scrap buster. I've pulled the majority of my fabrics from my "larger cuts" scrap bin and just tried to maximize what I can get out of the scraps.

I also started a new scrappy project using some Island Batik fabrics and my Accuquilt cutter. I still had most of the scraps left from my Hip to Be Square quilts from the Little Sir, Little Miss line (other than the pink and purples I pulled out to make my Hattie's Choice quilt a few months ago) and combined that with the black solid Island Batik fabric I had on hand for the background. The inspiration for my quilt is this pattern that is featured in the Accuquilt book that came with my starter set last year:

I'm not sure if I will do the borders as the pattern shows, but for now, I cut all of my blue and teal scraps into pieces and parts for flying geese for the star points and the rest of the colors (other than the green, which I am reserving for now) into squares for the four patches. The other change is that the pattern is actually for the 6" Qube set and I have an 8" Qube set so I am not really going off yardage, I'm just starting with this general idea for a a two block quilt.

I have all but four of my flying geese sets complete (at least of what I have cut thus far):

I've also made quite a few four patches that will become the centers of my star blocks:

The four patches will also be part of the secondary block for this quilt, which I have seen called by many names, including a "Frayed Four Patch". To me it's kind of like a mini Irish Chain block or a really small Courthouse Steps block. Some of my small squares will be used for the corners of these blocks so I can't just mindlessly turn all of them into four patches! I also realized that I need to cut some black small squares for the corners of my star blocks, so that will be my next task.

Now that I am finally in a better mind for sewing, it figures that I am going back to work on site (part time) starting next week! I still need to decide on my project for this month's Island Batik assignment, but I have a few good ideas! I'll be using the same fabrics that I used for my May project (I think) to make a wall hanging (I think).

Daisy Chain Baby -- Part II {Star Blocks}

The best thing about baby quilt is how quickly they start coming together! This week I have been working on the star blocks of my Daisy Chain baby quilt.

For the stars, I am using the pink large scale floral print.

The star points are all "ribbon blocks" as I like to call them.

Now my five star blocks are all finished and the top of my quilt is ready to be assembled!

I'll need to start thinking about ordering a backing for this as I know I don't have anything on hand at the moment that will work.

Brutal Honesty {January 2020}

Happy New Year!

December (and honestly November too) was a complete blur and I barely scratched the surface of my to do list -- I even put off a project I had originally planned as a Christmas gift. There were a lot of days where all my brain could handle after work was snuggling on the couch with tea and a Hallmark Christmas movie.

Just for fun, I went through and put asterisks by the projects that were on this list one year ago. (Or maybe not for fun, maybe more for personal accountability.)

September was slightly less productive than July and August but I am excited about quilting some of my long-waiting quilts this month after getting backings for two completed tops.

I have finished my Moxi charm pack quilt, but I have not been able to get pictures of it yet!

Two months in a row of some significant progress -- who have I become? I finished both my Magnolia mystery quilt and my Pineapple log cabin quilt prior to heading to quilt camp, and got a lot of piecing done on retreat, even if I did start a few new projects.

Brutal Honesty (August 2019)

I actually finished some quilts in July (hooray!) and I am going to be spending the beginning of August continuing to slash through some of my WIPS -- since I am going to quilt retreat in a few weeks and I am going to "treat myself" to some new projects! I'm also going to be deciding if any of my completed tops (and nearly completed tops) will be going off to the long arm quilter.

16. Pattern remix: I am making a new version of an older pattern with new fabrics that will be shown off eventually, but for now, this is my top priority as it needs to be sent off for photos in mid-August.

My UFO for August is my Magnolia mystery quilt. I actually have the backing, binding, and batting on hand so maybe, just maybe, I can actually finish this!

June was just about as unproductive as May. Oof.

I did get three quilts back from the quilter, so those will be easier finishes this month since they just need binding.

July is gonna be a big miss on the quilting front since I am going on vacation for *10 days* without my sewing machine. I will hopefully have a few posts I can schedule while I am traipsing across the Midwest with my bunnies in the backseat.

My UFO for May was to try to catch up on some of the previous months' UFOs that didn't get much progress. That...was kind of a failure.

My UFO for June will be my Birthstone blocks. This is the oldest UFO on my WIP list (but technically isn't my oldest UFO, but we aren't going to get into that) and I have three more blocks to make for this project. Here are the nine blocks I have finished:

I still need to make the garnet, ruby, and opal. The garnet and ruby are obviously different shades of red -- with the garnet being darker and the ruby having more pinks. For the opal, I'm planning to do white interspersed with pastels, something in between the grey/white diamond and the pink/purple alexandrite.

May already looks to be a very busy month! I have a number of secret sewing projects that are in the pipeline and will be shown off relatively soon -- so we'll see what kind of WIP progress I can manage this month.

April was a big month too -- because we had our first-ever Honey, Bunny, and Doll trunk show! It was a great experience and I can't wait to do another! (Tell your LQS that you want Honey, Bunny, and Doll patterns!)

14. Jingle Bell Square -- I now have 12 blocks complete, so I am 25% done with the main blocks.

Quilt alongs and long term projects:
15. Monthly Island Batik Ambassador projects -- In April, our assignment was to make a baby quilt using our Accuquilt Go! cutter. I made a pink, white, and black baby quilt using two alternating block designs. In May, we are tasked with making modern quilts! I'm going to be making a partial version of Cheryl and Paige's Modern Plus Sampler quilt pattern.

16. Daisy Chain Mystery Quilt -- All of the block unit directions have been published (Unit A, Unit B, Unit C, and Unit D) and next week we'll have the first half of our block construction directions. How is your Daisy Chain quilt coming along?

17. Coast to Coast Bee 2019 -- I have been working on Karen's quilt, and will be posting about my additions to her medallion quilt very soon!

New Projects/Secret Sewing:

18. Halloween Table Runner: This is slated to be shared next week!

19. Christmas Throw Quilt: This is on the schedule for later in May!

20. FQS Hop Quilt: This hop isn't until June so I am not starting it until after the above two projects have been finished and shared. I have all of my supplies waiting at the ready though.

My UFO for April was my Radiant Jewel quilt. I was able to complete the quilt top and it is ready to quilted!

My UFO for May is technically my Double Delight quilt. Since that quilt has already been sent off for quilting and I don't have it in my possession, I'm going to try to catch up with my February and March UFOs (my pineapple quilt and my September mini quilt) instead.
