Finished Taffy Quilt

Another cuddly baby quilt finished!

I quilted this whole quilt in one sitting last weekend and just finished up the binding last night while we watched football.

For the quilting, I did free motion swirls all over the quilt. The scale ended up being slightly smaller than I originally intended, but I am very happy with the quilting, nonetheless. Here's the front and back post-quilting, in the middle of finishing the binding yesterday:

Since I didn't have enough strips left over from the jelly roll to bind the quilt, I bound it with some green vine yardage in my stash -- I am pretty sure it is from the Honey Honey line.

And as usual, I backed with flannel -- this time I used grey since I was having a hard time finding a green or blue that went well with these fabrics.

This one is in the mail to it's rightful owner!

WIP Wednesday: Baby quilts, what else?

After taking a little breather after finishing up my Firecracker and Square Pegs quilts, it's high time to get back to making baby quilts. Partly because I have so many to do, partly because one of my friends had her baby Monday and the next one is due anytime.

I decided to sash together my Twelve Taffies quilt with black strips from the same jelly roll and grey cornerstones. I think I want to back it in grey and also use light grey thread to quilt it. What I didn't think about was that I don't have enough strips left to bind it, so I might have to find something in my stash that would work.

(Hooray for honest pictures with socks and reindeer PJ pants! And of course the sashing on the one side isn't ironed right -- boo!)

And since I now need to make two girl quilts (finally! It seemed like I was making boy quilts forever.) I started into another one of the fat quarter bundles I got ages ago in the girl colorway. I picked a pattern from a quilt in Quiltmaker magazine but I am just making the churn dash-like blocks and not doing any applique blocks for my quilt. I am going to keep the red at a minimum because it makes the quilt look so much darker! I am planning to back this one in pink too.

I have the strip piecing for the blocks all done and the sub-units cut which is awesome! Next up is to make all of the HSTs --  hopefully that's my project for tonight!

Twelve Taffies

I was able to finish up all of my taffy blocks! Hooray!

I'm not sure if I want to do any sashings or not yet. I'm thinking maybe to break up the blocks a little bit, but I don't want it to get too big -- it is a baby quilt! What are your thoughts?

WIP Wednesday: Making Taffy

Since I finished one baby quilt, it was time to start another since I still have four on my list. Another boy quilt coming right up!

I decided that I wanted to finally use the Salt Water Taffy quilt pattern from Moda Bake Shop from a long while back with a jelly roll of Road 15 by Sweetwater that I bought last year.

Because it's just my nature, I decided to modify the pattern a little bit. Or a lot? I'm making the whole quilt from one jelly roll -- using the light strips for the background instead of solids. I also used some strips to make four patches for the centers of the taffy blocks since I don't have a matching charm pack.

In my opinion, the original pattern has a lot of unnecessary seams, some of which are included to avoid having to use partial seams in the block. I'm all about the partial seam, quilty friends, so I set out to simplify the number of parts in this block.

I know partial seams are anathema to some people, but I am all about simplifying seams and saving a little bit of fabric.

I really like how all of these have turned out thus far! I have 3 green taffies and 3 dark grey taffies to make and then all of my blocks will be completed! I haven't yet used any of the black strips in the jelly roll -- I am thinking I will use them for sashing and/or binding.
