Rainbow Hexies -- Finished Rainbow Mini

I'm so excited to share the finished mini quilt that I made as a part of the Rainbow Mini Swap -- Round 2 on Instagram!

Here is the beauty!

I was very excited to make this because my partner was one of my hive mates in the Stash Bee last year! I didn't remember to get a picture of the back or of the goodies that I sent either -- boo! Jackie was very excited about them though.

The binding was a little bit tough especially with the inner corners, but it turned out really well! I put hanging pockets on the back as well.

Stats:
Name: Rainbow Hexies
Size: Approximately 20 inches across at the widest point
Quilting: free motion in various patterns
Fabrics: Kona Ash and lots and lots of scrappy strings

And here is the mini that I received, made by Briawna of Purple Poppy Quilts!

Isn't this just gorgeous? I am trying to figure out where to hang this beauty and have already started using the pin cushion!

Rainbow Mini Swap Progress

When last I posted about the progress for my mini for the Rainbow Mini Swap R2, This is what my blocks looked like:

I was thinking originally I would do eight giant hexies -- red, orange, yellow, green, teal, blue, purple, and pink. But then I realized that would be slightly too large, I decided to go with just red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple.

Here's the top all together:

This was actually surprisingly simple to put together. From the first picture, I trimmed off the extra grey so that each one became a true hexie and then sewed them all together in rainbow order around a center plain grey hexie.

Here's the mini quilted. It's hard to see the quilting in the first picture, but easier to see in the close up of the center.

I only quilted in the grey areas and each of the 6 colors' sections is quilted with a different design:
Red: flames
Orange: stipples
Yellow: loops
Green: echo bubbles
Blue: curls
Purple: zig-zags

Now I need to decide how to finish it and add a sleeve. I'm not sure if I should add more grey fabric around the edges to make it square or a large hexie, or if I should leave it with all of the corners. I like it as is and think I can easily bind it as is, but I am not sure what my partner would like! She's been silent on Instagram so I'm slightly concerned.

Sharing at the normal places!

Snowzilla

On Friday, you might have seen me post this picture on Instagram:

I was standing in line at the cutting counter line at Joann's to get flannel cut for the backing of my Summer Breeze baby quilt. I also picked up a cross stitch kit as a quiet project so I didn't drive my sweet husband insane with the sound of the sewing machine. Totally normal pre-snowstorm prepping activities.

I'm in Frederick, MD -- which is an hour northwest of DC and an hour west of Balitmore -- and the snow here started at 2 PM Friday and finally quit around 10 PM Saturday night. Here's what it looked like at 6 AM on Saturday in our parking lot:

And here's what it looked like Sunday at 7 AM:

Here's some pictures I took while we were digging out our cars later Sunday morning:

But being snowed in since Friday ain't bad when you're a quilter. I started working on the blocks for my Rainbow Mini Swap:

I have all of my little rainbow wedges sewn together so hopefully you'll see more of these string hexies very soon!

Stay warm and stay safe!
