Blue Batik Stars Baby Quilt -- Finished!

This project got pushed to the front of the line (so much so that I didn't get close to finishing my August ALYoF goal) because our friends had a little boy named Theodore on the 24th!

I made a quick trip to get some flannel and matching light blue thread to quilt this with and I was off!

The one thing I will miss about our old apartment is that it had wood floors throughout which was great for basting quilts. This one I basted in the kitchen and even though it is a baby quilt, it took up a good chunk of the space.

Here it is trimmed and quilted!

Here's a close up of the quilting. I did a medium scale meander all over the quilt and I got the whole thing quilted in less than a day (with lots of breaks of course) and only used four bobbins' worth of thread. I'm really happy with how the light blue looks on the white/cream stars -- it shows up, but it isn't a stark contrast.

I did actually bind it with the flannel as well. I hand bound it to the back to prevent super-bulkiness in my machine.

I'm hoping to send this one off in the mail today or tomorrow!

July ALYoF Goal -- completed!

My goal for this month (and last month, which I failed at) was getting my blue batik star quilt top all together.

After multiple quilt shop stops and lots of ironing, it is complete!

Here's after all of the blocks and pieced sashings were together and I realized that I actually hadn't made too many square in a square units -- they were also the cornerstones of the sashing. Duh.

I think that I've decided that I am not going to put a border on this one and potentially give it as a baby quilt. Those white stars really pop out at you don't they?

Not-A-Finish Friday

It's been a crazy long time since I've had a finish and an even longer time since I finished a quilt. Things around here have been a general fail zone.

I did get all of my blue batik star blocks sorted into 12 blocks and started sewing the first one.

I'm so happy with how the first one turned out! I also really like using this paper plate method for sorting my blocks ahead of time!

Silly me doesn't know how to count and I made 6 extra center square in a square blocks and about 10 extra star point squares AND THEN I cut my blue/cream/grey yardage into squares (at least 30 of them) and then I looked at my pattern and realized that I only needed 12 of them. I don't know what the kerfluffle is going on with my brain right now!

Maybe I'll have enough to make another row of blocks so all that fabric that I cut and block parts that I made won't go to waste! If worse comes to worse, they can always go on the back.

Anyone else on the struggle bus this week?

July Lovely Year of Finishes Goal

Since I didn't make my June goal (my first fail month this year!) since I needed to get more fabric, I'm going to renew it as my goal for this month.

Since last month, I did finish all of the paper pieced triangle units! Hooray! Now I just need to cut all of my 4 1/2 inch squares and then I'll be ready to get the top put together.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute to get my goal posted!

June A Lovely Year of Finishes Goal -- Scrappy Batik Quilt Top

I'm getting this goal submitted juuuuust under the wire!

I started working on a scrappy quilt top using blue/grey/aqua batiks with a white/cream/grey scrappy background before we moved and this month I want to get the rest of the paper pieced triangle units finished and then get the top put together. 

Right now, I have all of the four-patch units done and I have all of the square in a square units completed as well.

BUT I know that I still have at least 40 of the triangle units to make and I need to pull a few more fabrics in blues from my scrap bins to make sure that I don't run out! 

I stopped by the local quilt shop yesterday to get a half yard of the off white dotty batik in the picture and I am definitely going to have to hit up some other semi-local quilt shops to get a wider variety of background fabrics so that it looks scrappy. I was hoping to get quarter yards of a half dozen or so different fabrics, but there was not much to choose from at that shop.
