Jelly Glazed Hearts Tablerunner {Fat Quarter Shop Hop}

Today I am participating in the Jelly Glazed Hearts tablerunner blog hop with the Fat Quarter Shop! Check out their post on the Jolly Jabber here!

For this project, I picked a mini jelly roll of the new Alma line from the Ruby Star Society and picked one of cream prints for the background fabric.

I picked out eight strips from the jelly roll for my blocks and paired them up.

Next came chopping my strip sets into the correct lengths for each block.

Then I made the heart blocks and added the setting triangles to each block.

This is a really, really long table runner!

I used backing from my stash and quilted this runner with leaves and swirls. I used six of the remaining jelly roll strips to make a scrappy bias binding. (I used this tutorial as my guide.)

This runner is actually just a little bit too big for my table (go figure) so this will likely become a gift!

Christmas Churns {New on Moda Bake Shop!}

I'm excited to share that my newest pattern for Moda Bake Shop has been published! Introducing Christmas Churns!

This is the first time that I've gotten to work with a Lella Boutique line for MBS -- and it did not disappoint! Little Tree is a fun holiday line with beautiful poinsettias! I like that the greens in this line aren't too olive nor too grassy.

The basic block of this quilt is a churn dash, made from strip pieced jelly roll strips and HSTs made from charm squares, centered around a nine-patch. The quilt uses yardage plus one jelly roll and one charm pack -- without a lot of waste!

The sixteen blocks use nearly all of the charm squares, but since there were quite a few leftover full and partial jelly roll strips, I decided that the quilt needed a scrappy piano key border, made from alternating dark and light 4.5" x 2.5" rectangles, most of which were cut from the scraps left over from the churn dash blocks.

I picked out the red and white stripe from the line for my binding and it was a great choice! I picked the green background version of the poinsettia print for the backing. For the quilting, I did a simple stipple to let the fun prints and piecing shine.

(Side note: having a house with a real yard means that I can take some pretty great quilt pictures without having to put shoes on or drive to the park! The freshly stained deck -- thank you, Park Ranger husband! -- is also a great background for quilt pictures too.)

These blocks are 14" finished, and the quilt as designed and made is approximately 68" square with the piano key border. I am reasonably sure that if you had two charm packs instead of one, you could reasonably make a 5x5 block quilt instead of a 4x4 block quilt like mine.

After having no Christmas quilts for a very long time, I now have nearly a half dozen! Now  have one for every chair and two for the couch!

Jolly Bar Meringue {New Shortcut Quilt with Fat Quarter Shop!}

Today I am so excited to finally show off this quilt that's been waiting patiently to be premiered!

This is my version of the Fat Quarter Shop's newest shortcut quilt pattern and kit -- Jolly Bar Meringue!

For my version, I picked a Jolly Bar of Sweet Marion by April Rosenthal and used off-white Moda Bella for my background. I've never made this many half-rectangle triangles before (or really ever) so this was a new adventure for me!

It was surprisingly easy to make these units (hooray!) and after making all of my HRTs, I decided that I wanted to put my own "spin" on this quilt -- literally!

Instead of laying out the units in pairs, I decided to arrange my colors into pinwheels!

I just love the combination of florals and geometric prints in this collection!

This was one of my projects from when I went on quilt retreat all the way back in August! The top was finished while I was there.

For the backing and binding, I used a tassel print that I found on sale. You might have seen this fabric featured when I did my "pattern matching for invisible seams" tutorial!

The quilting is one of my go-to motifs -- a meander with daisies. For this quilt, I actually hand stitched the binding to the back.

Cozy Cabins {Log Cabin Quilts with Island Batik}

As an Island Batik Ambassador, I am provided with samples of various lines of Island Batik fabrics to use and share with you!

Our theme for November is log cabin blocks! Log cabin blocks are a ubiquitous quilt component from antique quilts to modern quilts! I created a new Log Cabin Pinterest board while I was thinking about what to make for this challenge.

I found that I was frequently drawn to what many people call "quarter log cabin" blocks and so I decided that I would use this as my design inspiration for this challenge.

When looking through my Island Batik fabric stash, I decided to pull out my 10" stacker of Spirit Rhythm fabric for this project. For my project, I wanted something simpler and also something that would efficiently use my layer cake squares.

I did quite a bit of math (which is the fun part for me!) and found that I could easily make 25 9.5" quarter log cabin blocks from this stacker (Island Batik stackers have 42 10" squares, FYI) with a little bit of wiggle room for miscuts, just in case. When I did the math, trying to cut for 30 blocks was *very* tight and had no room for mistakes, so I figured going with a 25 block quilt was the best route.

To do the cutting, I sorted my 10" squares into three piles -- one pile for the center squares, one pile for the first round of logs, and one pile for the outer round of logs for the blocks.

One block requires:
One (1) 4.5" square for the center of the block (color A)
One (1) 3" x 4.5" rectangle for the first round (color B)
One (1) 3" x 7" rectangle for the first round (color B)
One (1) 3" x 7" rectangle for the second round (color C)
One (1) 3" x 9.5" rectangle for the second round round (color C)

I put together a quick diagram on how I cut the parts from my 10" squares while wasting as little fabric as possible.

In the color B square and the first color C square, I had a little bit of extra fabric that wasn't quite 3" wide due to trimming. From those scraps, I cut all of that extra fabric into 2.5" squares for a future project.

Now I'll be working on getting the rest of the blocks done and then putting the top together. This will tentatively be a Christmas/"thank you for being an amazing friend for over 10 years" gift!

Jungle Cruise {Blog Hop Preview}

As you might have see on Instagram, I am working on my own version of our Summer Patio pattern using the Jungle Cruise line from Island Batik for our August blog hop! Check back on August 28th for my finish!

The Jungle Cruise line is shipping to stores soon, and I've had a lot of fun thus far working with this line. Summer Patio is a great beginner pattern and perfect for yardage or 2.5" strips.

Jolly Bar Jazz {Shortcut Quilt with the Fat Quarter Shop!}

I am so excited to be a part of the latest hop for the Fat Quarter Shop's Shortcut Quilt Series! Jolly Bar Jazz is a fun twin sized quit made from two Jolly Bars and yardage.

For my version of this quilt, I chose the newest Christmas line from Basic Grey - Berry Merry.

Instead of using traditional 40" yardage for my background, I used a grey 108" wide backing fabric in the Basic Grey Hits the Spot pattern for my background. I had a little bit of trouble initially cutting from such a large piece of fabric, but in a little bit had no problem at all! I used the red version of the same fabric for my backing and binding.

I pulled out the lightest prints for my block centers and separated the rest of the fabric for the corner units (Block A) and the side units (block B).

To make Block A, you sew strips to your Jolly Bar and then trim to a 6.5" square.

The rest of the piecing is just straight seams! Isn't the spotted yardage a fun background? This quilt top went together so fast! As for the quilting, I did large curls over the entire quilt.

As mentioned above, I used the backing for the binding.

My finished quilt is full of Christmas cheer!
