Finished Uncle Sam Wallhanging

It's finished!!

It's a little bit hard to see in these pictures, but I did a scrappy binding on this quilt using the leftover 2.5" strips from the quilt and excess cut from the backing. I think it makes it a little bit more festive.

Here's a close up of the finished border with binding! (shows the pieced binding a little bit better)

And the ever-so-lovely scrap-happy pieced back!

I'm off to Michigan this weekend to see my lovely cousin get married! Hooray!

Quilted Uncle Sam

This project has come together so fast!

Today I did all of the machine quilting for my Uncle Sam wall hanging. I ended up doing echo quilting around Sam and all of the stars and echo quilting inside the red zig-zag border and the blue banded border.

Here's the whole thing with the binding stitched on the front for me to hand stitch later tonight:

Here's a close up of the two inner borders:

Here's a picture of the back on one of the corners:

Here's the backing (yay for pieced backings and using stuff from your stash!) with the hanging sleeve sewed on.

Thanks for all the input, ladies!

(Also, this is a little ways off, but I'll be looking for a few guest posters between October 10th-October 20th while I'm off getting married and honeymooning. So think on it for a while and I'll put a "formal" call out in a few weeks!)

Uncle Sam -- with borders!

This weekend I got the borders on my Uncle Sam wall hanging and now the top is complete!

The first border is a chevron/zig zag border that the directions said to make using the stitch and flip technique, but I decided to save myself some fabric (and time!) and used the Fast Flying Geese method instead. It turned out so fantastic!

The second border is "scraps" in the directions, but I went with 4.5" long strips of two alternating medium blue fabrics.

The outermost border is a checkerboard of the dark red and dark blue fabrics and the light fabrics. I decided to make mine with a diagonal stripe pattern with the red and blue.

I pieced the back together with three different fabrics that I either didn't use in the project or only used a little bit of and now it is all pinned and ready to be quilted! I am not sure what kind of quilting that I want to do with this one quite yet -- I think I want to do outline quilting around Uncle Sam and the stars and a little in the borders. What do you think?

Sharing at Needle and Thread Thursday!

Independent Sewing

Being gone apparently made me miss all of the invites for Fourth of July parties and plans. So I spent the whole day sewing at home instead, with a little break where I went and laid out and might have gotten a little toasted on the backside.

I made my July Stash Bee Blocks:

And I started my Uncle Sam wall hanging -- and yes, I get the irony that I started it ON the Fourth of July. It is very, very festive! I have three borders that go around the outside of this one and I am almost halfway done making the flying geese units for the first border.

I'm also really excited about this project because I am using all fabrics from my stash -- some of which was bought for this project, others not. I will definitely have more than enough to back and bind this little beauty as well!

And it's the weekend... again!

May Fat Quarter Friends Swap

Yesterday I got my goodies from the May Fat Quarter Friends Swap!

And yes, that is a package of Wonder Clips! I am very excited about that.

I requested red, white, and blue this month because I am planning to make a patriotic wall hanging using the Uncle Sam pattern from Quiltmaker. It is a rather old pattern, but I happen to have an actual copy of the issue that it is featured in! Hooray!

I'm planning to use red/white and blue/white prints instead of the "natural" used in this pattern to make mine a little less country/rustic looking and a lot more POW BAM I LOVE AMERICA looking. If that's a thing.

Happy Friday to you, no finishes for me this week, but hopefully next week!
