On Ringo Lake {Finished Quilt}

Since my mom came into town for the long weekend, we got to spend a lot of time sewing and gabbing in between eating and forcing her to watch all of the sports with my husband and I (bless her heart!). She also brought me not one, but two finished quilts!

First up is my On Ringo Lake quilt! This was simply pantograph quilted with loops and my mom was nice enough to machine bind it for me using the backing fabric.

While I was extremely happy with the quilt when I finished the top, I absolutely love it now that it's finished.

This was my first Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt and I really loved it! I definitely fell behind through the holidays since we were out of town, but I still was able to finish the top before the end of January.

I'm not exactly sure what I'll be using this quilt for just yet, but I'm sure I'll be using it this summer!

On Ringo Lake {Clues #7, #8, & #9}

Having a three day weekend last week and then my husband being out of town for a few days this week was a big jump start on a number of projects, especially my On Ringo Lake quilt!

After finishing up all of the individual units, starting to put the units together seemed much faster, or rather, much more rewarding!

Clue #7 was pairing up all of our flying geese units -- working on this a little in the evenings made it go quite quickly!

I laid out the stacks of units with one another to get an idea of how my blocks were going to look. So bright, so lovely! 

These zipped together into blocks with very few uses of the seam ripper. A triumph! Here are all of my blocks.

Clue #9 is the reveal post with the quilt top construction. Last weekend I paired up all of the sashing units and sewing the top together was weekend's main project. I was able to lay everything out and get the blocks and sashings sewn into rows. I finished sewing the last few rows on the top Saturday morning. It's bright and beautiful!

I don't have anything on hand for backing and other things that will need to be quilted first, so I will start window shopping for a backing. I'm in a rather lovely and strange place right now where I have no pressing deadlines so I have been able to work ahead on some future projects as well as working on some of my just for fun quilts, like On Ringo Lake.

Although this probably needs it's own name to reflect its more tropical feeling! Maybe this should be On Montego Bay?

On Ringo Lake {Clues #5 and #6}

While the big reveal has taken place, I'm still trudging along with the clues for On Ringo Lake!

With our holiday travels, we were already in Ohio when Clue #5 was released on the 22nd and I didn't take any of my fabrics or tools with me. I did however dig through my mom's scrap bins once we were in Michigan and find some fabrics to add to my On Ringo Lake fabrics.

I did all of the orange and black cutting for Clue #5 on Christmas Day, and did the cutting for Clue #6 on December 29th, but wasn't able to start any of the sewing until this weekend.

I did Clue #6 first, adding the triangles to Clue #4. I still need to trim the dog ears but I am loving how bright these units turned out!

It seemed like Clue #5 went faster than the previous batch of geese that I had made in Clue #2. I trimmed all of these units while we watched football and the Golden Globes last night. Either way, I am now complete through Clue #6!

My goal for this week is to get the goose pairs sewn together for Clue #7 in the evenings so that I can put together my blocks for Clue #8 this coming weekend! I will need to go back and make a few extra units for the sashing and setting, but I believe that I have enough of the necessary units to make the blocks themselves. My version will be 25 blocks on point and end up somewhere around 60 inches square, I estimate.

On Ringo Lake {Clue #4}

I'm currently over 300 miles away from my sewing machine in Ohio, but I did want to pop in and share my On Ringo Lake progress!

I finished up Clue #4 this week before we made our pilgrimage to the Midwest for Christmas. As with the first three clues, I did my cutting on Friday night while we finished Season 2 of The Crown.

About half of my yellow squares came from my stash of small already cut squares, so that cut down what I needed to pull from my yellow stash. I had to cut all of my oranges and made a pretty big dent in them. These units didn't use any of the background fabric.

I did all of the sewing on Saturday and Sunday in between all of our Christmas activities -- including but not limited to: picking up a toy for an angel tree present, brunch on Sunday at one of our favorite places, opening presents, and having friends over for dinner. 

The second half of the pressing got pushed back to Monday night. I was rather impressed that I neither under nor over-cut for these units, and didn't lose any units (since I made over 100 and I'm only making a half-sized quilt!)

My best estimate is that I used at least 20 different prints of each color. Some are well represented (like some of the yellow floral fabrics or the orange feather print!) and others are only used once! Here are some of my units all laid out together -- I still am confused by the units from last week, so I left them out!

Clue #5 is out today but I won't be starting on it until at least next Thursday. I'll plot about what fabrics to use (and potentially raid my mom's scrap bins while I am in Michigan!) I think I might need to add in some of each of my colors depending on how many clues are still in the pipeline!

On Ringo Lake {Clue #3}

Another Monday, another update on my On Ringo Lake units!

For clue #3, our clue instructed us to make right-facing and left-facing stitch and flip units. These sort of look like parallelograms to me, but someone else called them "dyslexic geese"! When paired together, they could (might?) make chevron units, but we aren't supposed to sew them together -- or at least not yet!

For these units, I had to add in some aqua fabrics that I hadn't used in my flying geese units. I ended up using 14 different aqua fabrics and at least 25 different black fabrics! A lot of my black squares came from my all squares scrap box! It shortened my cutting time significantly to have things already in the right size ready to go!

As of now, I have no confidence in my guesses about how these units will end up coming together, but I did lay out some of my units together to see how the colors are looking!

I really have made a huge dent in my scraps with this project -- especially the aqua and the black! Here are all of my units all bagged up and ready!

On Ringo Lake {Clue #2}

I'm 2-for-2 so far -- I have been able to get both of my block sets for On Ringo Lake done quite quickly! Since clues have been coming out on Friday, I've been able to break up the different parts of the unit construction over the course of the weekend. This time around, we are making flying geese!

Given that I don't pre-cut my scraps, I found it easier to do the math on my own and make fast flying geese instead of the methods Bonnie suggests. Friday night I was able to get all of the squares cut -- I had to decide on my final fabric and went with aqua! 

I did all of the sewing done in various bursts on Saturday and finished up the pressing and trimming on Sunday.

I ended up using seven different aqua fabrics and about ten different black fabrics for my geese! The two brighter aqua prints with pink/orange/yellow were left from my Wishes quilt. The black text print is from two jelly roll strips of Architextures.

On Ringo Lake {Clue #1}

Yes, all. Laugh at my lack of self control at starting new projects!

I did actually plan to join in on Bonnie Hunter's Mystery quilt, On Ringo Lake, this year after sitting on the sidelines for the last few years. However, after seeing the initial fabric requirements, with 3-5 yards suggested for four different fabrics, I almost changed my mind! I wasn't totally taken with the original fabric suggestions - aqua, coral, brown, and neutrals.

After seeing all of the creative alternate color combinations others were planning to use, I decided to go out on a limb and come up with my own color combination after Clue #1 came out on Friday. My new color scheme is yellow (replacing aqua), TBD (coral), orange (brown), and black (neutrals) and I'm only making half as many units as Bonnie "prescribes" in each clue for a smaller quilt.

The color that will replace coral is TBD only because we didn't use it in the first clue. I have three options -- aquas, pinks, or lime green. I'm not sure what to do just yet, so tell me what you think in the comments!

The first clue was to make nine-patches. The above photo is from when I had cut all of the strips for my nine patches. I cut from my strings first and then cut from small scraps, estimating how much fabric I would need for my units. I strip pieced my strips and did all of the sub-cutting in one evening and finished up the nine-patches the next.

I did a surprisingly good job estimating how much fabric I would need for the first clue - I ended up with no extra components and had one extra nine-patch!

It's also fun to look at some of these scraps and remember where they came from! The black and gold Chinese writing print came from a charm square swap I was in in 2012. The bright yellow floral is from my first quilt for Moda Bake Shop. The orange in the lower left nine-patch is from my Gathering mystery quilt.
