Pineapple Log Cabin Quilt {Finished Quilt}

In my push to finish, finish, finish, I got my Pineapple Log Cabin quilt finished before it languished on a shelf for 6, 12, or 18 months -- unlike a lot of other finishes this year! Here's the quilt top when it was completed in June:

When I started this quilt, I got all of the supplies for it at one time -- I thought ahead and included the batting and a spool of Aurifil thread the same time I ordered the fabric. Sometimes, I forget about batting and thread -- especially batting! -- and that ends up being an impediment to finishing something. 

(That being said, I have started a new column on my WIP/UFO spreadsheet -- a "shopping list" column -- to note what I need to get to finish a quilt. My hope is that I can be more proactive about making sure I have everything I need for a project.)

For the quilting on this quilt, I got a spool of variegated Aurifil 50 wt. thread -- the color is "teal spotted". However, I used a solid color light teal for all of the bobbins. I found it to be much easier to work from the two spools for top thread and bobbin thread rather than to use the variegated thread in both the top and the bobbin.

This is the largest quilt (and I think actually the only "quilt") that I have quilted using variegated thread. I believe I've only ever quilted table runners and mini quilts with variegated thread before. For the design, I attempted to copy the same chrysanthemum motif that my mom used to quilt my Good Fortune quilt. But being "on brand" for myself, my flowers are denser and smaller. 

Regardless, I really liked using this design and found it easy to move across the quilt, to fill in spaces of various shape and size, and only once did I run out of bobbin mid-quilt-stream. 

For the binding, I had set aside a half yard of one of my fabrics -- a fun striped, scalloped print -- and turned the entire half yard into some really awesome bias binding. The whole half yard was more than I needed, but now I have enough bias binding for a mini quilt ready to go. 

This quilt turned out quite lovely and the color scheme was a fun diversion from my typical choices.

In my head, I call this the "OG Cotton + Steel quilt" since most of the prints are from the first few Cotton + Steel collections. I missed out on a lot of these fabrics when they came out since I am a quilter on a serious budget, but holy man do these fabrics feel amazing in the hand. 

I'm *very* glad I sort of maybe over-ordered and have lots left over.

Pineapple Day Quilt {Quilt Top}

It's quilt fashion show day for the Pineapple Day Quilt Along with the Fat Quarter Shop!

For my quilt, I did not use the official layout. Instead of sewing my 6" and 12" blocks into rows, I sewed my 6" blocks into pairs. I then interspersed my 6" pairs among my columns of 12" blocks and my quilt before borders was 48" wide by 60" long. I added the 4.5" borders as directed in the pattern, but my finished quilt is just slightly shorter than the pattern.

I absolutely loved working with these pineapple papers (especially the 6" size!) and am excited to use them again in the future for other scrappy projects.

Pineapple Day Quilt {Large Blocks}

I've been tucked away paper piecing my large pineapple blocks for my Pineapple Day quilt!

These blocks are 12" finished rather than 6" finished, so while they might take slightly longer than their 6" counterparts, they have a lot more bang for the buck!

I made a total of 16 large blocks for my Pineapple Day quilt:

Now I'm ready to put my quilt top together! In a few days, we'll be having the pineapple day quilt celebration and I'm so excited to finish up this quilt!

Pineapple Day Quilt {Small Blocks}

I've been hard at work making the small blocks for my Pineapple Day quilt!

As a reminder, I'm using yardage instead of pre-cuts for my focal fabrics. This week, we've been working on the small 6" blocks for our quilts.

Right now, I have 6 blocks done, and I will definitely need to make more! (For reference, for some reason the top left quilt block's corner triangles did NOT want to stay flat, and that's why it looks so funny.)

Pineapple Day {QAL with FQS - Supplies}

I'm pleased as punch to be quilting along with the Pineapple Day quilt along with the Fat Quarter shop! The pattern uses the FQS's pineapple pads -- now available in two sizes!

I've played around with a number of different pineapple log cabin paper pieced patterns, but these pineapple pads from the FQS are great because the sewing lines are super fine -- which helps you be very accurate -- and the paper is lightweight without being flimsy -- which makes it easier to pull the paper off in the end.

I'm going to be a real quilt rebel and work from yardage instead of pre-cuts. I picked out half yards of a number of older Cotton + Steel prints in blues, teals, and periwinkles. The creamy print on the right will be my background fabric and the dark teal umbrella print will be used in the quilt top and for the backing.

Rather than being full-on scrappy, I'll use three different prints per block. I'm not 100% sure if I'll go with the suggested layout or if I'll come up with my own layout.
