Facets {RSC May 2016}

Since I finished my Farmer's Wife blocks last week, I decided to dig in my abandoned project box to see if there was anything I could work on to keep making a dent in my green scraps.

A long, long while back, I started working on scrappy birthstone blocks. At the time, only ended up making four blocks and then the project got shuffled into the box. This pattern is from No Hats in the House.

From my pile of greens, I was able to pull out a pile of fabrics that would work for an emerald block and a pile for a peridot block. Here are my two green blocks:

I had to work in a few more prints into the peridot block, but I think it still turned out good and will blend well with the blocks once they are all done.

Now I have six blocks done!

Top row: February amethyst, April diamond, May emerald
Bottom row: June alexandrite, August peridot, November citrine

I will still need to make a garnet for January, aquamarine for March, ruby for July, sapphire for September, opal for October, and blue topaz/tanzanite for December. That's three blue blocks, two red blocks and one white/rainbow block that will be worked in over the next few months.

  3. Cool! I've never seen these blocks before, and they're interesting. Something different than just squares. Looking forward to seeing them in a quilt.

  4. How will these be set in a quilt? Using needle turn applique? They look great. :)

  5. What a great rainbow scrap project! I'm assuming this is a paper pieced block. It's so intricate. How large is the block?

  6. I haven't seen these blocks before either, and I think they're fascinating. They really look like gemstones. Keep going on these - they'll make a lovely quilt!

  7. Those are just gorgeous! I can see why you might take a break from them peridically, though! How are they joined together in the final quilt top?

  8. Wow! Those are gorgeous! I've never seen that block before, so I'm just gobsmacked.
    Thinking of setting them with black, like jewels sparkling on black velvet?

  15. I love where this is going. Maybe I need to take a look in my UFO pile and see what "gems" I can find. (Oh, I couldn't resist that corny joke!)

  16. Love your facet blocks! My guild is having their Ruby anniversary for their quilt show next year and I'd love to make a Ruby block, where did you get this pattern?
    All of your Birthstones are totally awesome!

  17. These are lovely! Doing a years worth of birthstones is a great idea! I feel like peridot is always a struggle to match, even when you're talking about the real stone. Yours looks great!
