Lucky Girl

Needless to say, life is still crazy. But only three more days until this is (hopefully) all over.

Thank you to you all for your lovely comments on the last post! I sincerely appreciate them!

On Saturday, I received TWO care packages. One from my mom:

...with a bag of scraps and a pile of patterns that she got two copies of when she and my sister went on a shop-hop in March. And of course Peeps because Peeps and Baja Blast Mountain Dew are my two weaknesses.

And one from my lovely friend Lauren, who was a chemistry major with me at Hillsdale (where I went to undergrad) who is now in graduate school at Texas A&M:

I really wanted to wear the Aggies shirt today, but it was snowing and I am pretty sure it didn't get over 40 degrees today. So sad!

So despite all of the crazy, I am a very lucky girl!

Self-inflicted Hiatus

As you may or may not remember, for months I have been preparing to take my oral comprehensive candidacy exam (also known as the oral exam). If I pass, I am an official PhD candidate, and if not, I'll probably become a trophy wife.

Said exam is exactly one week from today. I turned in my proposals to my committee members today and now all that's left is to relearn everything that I've ever learned about anything in chemistry and prepare my presentations to go along with my two proposals.

No big deal.

So the last week has been really stressful with my practice talks and finishing up my papers (and not getting a lot of sleep because I have had to basically rewrite one of my proposals in 48ish hours) and I had to do something depressing.

I had to put away my rotary cutting mat from my "kitchen table" (that I almost never eat at unless I have company, so it's basically my sewing table) so that I could DO WORK at the table. This is what I suffer through to get a Dr. before my name.

Adding to the Stash

I was finally able to get to the apartment office and pick up fabric I ordered almost two weeks ago.

I love fabric.com. Most of this is Free Spirit, as it had the best selection in the 50% off section and I tried to get some things that coordinated.

Accountability!

Rhonda over at Quilter in the Gap is hosting a quarter-by-quarter Finish-Along to encourage the finishing of UFOs! I missed the first quarter link-up entirely but I decided that this would be a great way for me to try to push forward and finish some projects once I get this exam over with (16 days, people!)

2012 Finish-A-Long

This is sort of in order of "closest to being finished" to "probably won't happen."

1. X-quilt
It has been machine quilted and is waiting for me up in Michigan. All it needs is binding!

2. Mystery Quilt
Again, all machine quilted and just needs binding. I'll be picking up these two quilts in May when I go up to Michigan for my sister's college graduation.

3. Snowflake quilt
Top is all done, needs quilting and binding.

4. Seville Quilt
Same thing, quilting and binding.

5. Shoes
Top needs to be finished, need to find and buy border fabric for this one.

6. Civil war quilt
Again, need to buy and find sashing and border fabric and finish putting the top together.

7. Railroad Quilt
HAND QUILTING. Seriously, I just need to take the quilt into the living room and work on it when I watch TV, instead of pinning on Pinterest.

I know that I can finish 1 and 2 before the end of June, and I think that getting 3 and 4 done is possible. Getting 5 and 6 all the way finished might be a stretch, but I will definitely get the tops done. 7 is the thorn in my side from long, long ago and I am going to get it done before the end of the summer because now that I have a queen sized bed, I can make good use of it!

All Paired up.

Happy belated Easter, everyone!

I went to visit Park Ranger Boyfriend this weekend and I got sunburned on my face when we went to the baseball game. So I look like a lobster with sunglasses lines.

I got home Sunday night and started trimming down my shoe blocks and finished trimming them up tonight. It went from this:

to this:

to all finished:

And surprisingly, I didn't have a terrible time laying them all out!

Lovely.

Getting there.

Last night I finished up my final 8 shoe blocks! This is how all of them look at the moment.

Now I need to work on squaring them all up to 7.5 inches.

I also got out the leftover fabric and blocks from Tiny's Quilt and cut them into 3 inch squares and made 16 patches from the leftovers.

I'm not quite sure what I am going to do with them just yet, but they are pretty to look at.
